Anatomy of a VIN

Every VIN encodes three independent blocks of information. Understanding the structure helps you verify authenticity and catch transcription errors before they propagate.

WVWZZZ3CZPE123456
WVWPos. 1–3
WMI

World Manufacturer Identifier

The first three characters identify the country of manufacture and the specific manufacturing entity. WVW is Volkswagen AG, Germany. This segment is assigned by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and is globally unique.

ZZZ3CZPos. 4–9
VDS

Vehicle Descriptor Section

Positions 4–9 are assigned by the manufacturer and encode the vehicle type, model, body style, engine code, and restraint system. Position 9 is a check digit, a mathematically derived value used to detect transcription errors and forgeries.

PE123456Pos. 10–17
VIS

Vehicle Identifier Section

The final eight characters are the production sequence. Position 10 encodes the model year; position 11 identifies the production plant. The last six digits are the sequential serial number assigned on the production line, unique within the manufacturer and year.

What you don't know about the vehicle can cost you.

Every unverified vehicle represents a financial and reputational risk. Sourcing from incomplete data leads to costly returns, disputes, and lost customer trust.

01 · Equipment

Incomplete equipment data.

Listing descriptions rarely reflect the factory-fitted specification. Without VIN-level decoding, buyers pay for features that don't exist, or miss add-ons that would justify a higher price.

02 · Pricing

Misvalued vehicles.

New-price and option-cost data are rarely available at the point of purchase. Without them, reconditioning budgets are guesswork and residual value models lose accuracy.

03 · Service

Hidden service liabilities.

Open recalls, warranty status, and service intervals derived from the VIN are critical for accurate cost-of-ownership modelling, yet typically absent from listing data.

One VIN. Complete vehicle intelligence.

Factory-accurate equipment list.

Retrieve the full OEM-certified options list for any VIN, including standard features, optional packages, and retrofits. No guesswork, no manual cross-referencing.

New-price and residual-value anchoring.

Access the original list price and option costs to anchor residual-value models and inform purchase-price negotiations with hard data.

Service and recall intelligence.

Retrieve active recall campaigns, service-interval data, and warranty status directly from the VIN, so every vehicle enters your inventory with a complete risk profile.

From VIN to verified vehicle profile

1
Submit VINPass a single 17-character VIN via the API, dashboard, or bulk CSV upload. The request is validated and routed to the appropriate OEM data pipeline.
2
Decode & EnrichOur engine cross-references the VIN against manufacturer databases, equipment registries, and service records to compile a complete vehicle profile.
3
Receive ReportThe decoded report is returned in structured JSON, ready to feed your DMS, pricing engine, or frontend, within 120 ms on average.

Data Coverage

Everything the VIN encodes, decoded.

01 · Technical Specs

Full factory specification.

Engine type, displacement, output, transmission, drivetrain, dimensions, and kerb weight, derived directly from the manufacturer database, not from listing text.

02 · Origin Data

Where every vehicle was born.

Manufacturer, production plant, plant code, production date, and original destination market, the provenance layer that underpins accurate history checks.

03 · Equipment List

OEM-certified options, item by item.

The complete factory-fitted options list from the OEM build record. No inference, no estimation, exactly what was installed at the plant, including packages and retrofits.

04 · New Price

The original price tag, recovered.

Base list price plus individual option costs at the time of manufacture. The foundation for residual-value modelling, purchase-price negotiation, and insurance assessments.

05 · Service Data

Recall and warranty status.

Active recall campaigns, warranty expiry, and model-specific service intervals retrieved from official manufacturer and registry sources.

06 · Safe Purchase

Every check in one request.

Combine VIN decoding with vehicle history verification to flag odometer anomalies, insurance write-offs, and outstanding financing, before signing any contract.

FAQ

Answers to the questions you ask most often.

A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a 17-character code that uniquely identifies every road vehicle. You can find it on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windscreen), on the driver's door jamb sticker, in the vehicle registration document (Section E), or stamped on the chassis in the engine bay.

A full decode returns: technical specification (engine, transmission, drivetrain, dimensions, weight), the complete factory-fitted equipment list, the original new-car price broken down to individual options, and origin data including manufacturer, production plant, date, and destination market.

Equipment data is sourced directly from OEM build records, the same system used by authorised workshops and insurance assessors. Accuracy is OEM-grade: if a feature was installed at the factory, it appears in the list. Dealer-fitted accessories added after production are not included.

The database covers 35+ brands including all major European, German, Asian, and American manufacturers. Full equipment and pricing data is available for highlighted brands in the coverage matrix. For all other brands, technical specification and origin data are returned.

Integration is via a REST API, a single POST request with the VIN returns structured JSON in under 120 ms. An OpenAPI specification, client SDKs, and a Postman collection are available in the developer documentation. For Omnetic DMS users, integration is native with no configuration required.

Yes. Bulk decoding is supported both via API (batch endpoint) and via CSV upload in the dashboard. Batch API requests process up to 1,000 VINs per call; CSV uploads support up to 50,000 VINs per file with results returned as a structured export.

Yes. New-price data is sourced from OEM list-price databases at the time of vehicle production and includes individual option costs. It is the same data used by insurance companies, leasing firms, and residual-value specialists, and is considered the authoritative input for depreciation and collateral models.

VIN Decoder returns what a vehicle is: factory specification, equipment, original price, and build provenance. Vehicle History returns what happened to a vehicle: odometer records, accident and insurance data, ownership changes, and lien checks. Both services are available individually or as a combined report.

Yes. VIN Decoder processes only vehicle identification data, no personal data is stored or transmitted beyond what is required for the API request. All data in transit is encrypted using TLS 1.3. The service operates in full compliance with the GDPR.

The API operates with a 99.9% uptime SLA and a median response time under 120 ms. Status, incident history, and real-time availability are published at status.carsdata.com. Enterprise customers can negotiate a 99.95% SLA with a dedicated support contact.
