How to price a used electric car: battery health, European demand and time to sell
Battery health and warranty, new EV prices and demand across Europe: how to price a used electric car and allow for a longer time to sell.

Key findings
- Derive the price from comparable electric cars with the same battery, drivetrain and charging equipment in the market where you want to sell the car. Model, year and mileage are not enough for a comparison.
- Document battery condition with a test and a written report. In Germany, such a test costs roughly €70–90. ADAC regards a battery state of health (SoH) of at least 88% as reasonable at 100,000 km. Treat the remaining warranty, which for most manufacturers is 8 years or 160,000 km, as a separate item.
- The ceiling for the price of a nearly new used car is set by a new electric car after discounts and incentives. In France, electric cars under three years old were on average only 5% cheaper than new electric cars after incentives between January and September 2026.
- Expect a slow sale. In the third quarter of 2026, professional sellers in France took an average of 134 days to resell a used electric car, so set the buying price so that the deal can absorb a later price reduction.
A used electric car can have the same year of manufacture and mileage as the car next to it in the listings and still appeal to a different buyer. A smaller battery, no fast charging or a warranty that is about to expire change both how usable the car is and the commercial risk. Anyone working out how to price a used electric car has to start by identifying the exact version and finish with an estimate of the price at which, and the time within which, the car will find a customer. In between, the car's technical condition has to be linked with new electric car prices and with demand in the market where the car will be sold.
How to price a used electric car: start with the right comparison
With a Volkswagen Golf or a Škoda Octavia, a dealer usually only needs to separate engine, transmission and equipment. With an electric car, battery size, drivetrain variant and charging capability must be separated just as rigorously. The model name on its own is far too broad. A cheaper car in the listings often has a smaller battery or equipment that narrows the pool of buyers.
The comparison also has to match the country of sale. A low purchase price abroad says nothing about whether the deal will pay off after transport and preparation, or how quickly the car will sell at home. Offers from dealers, private sellers and auctions are also made on different commercial terms. Derive the price, therefore, from the cars that will compete directly with your advert.
Price Report from Carsdata estimates the selling price from comparable cars selected by make, model, age, mileage, equipment and region. Alongside the price, it gives a price range, a confidence level for the estimate and the expected time to sell. The dealer thus gets a market baseline to which the result of the battery test can then be added.
For common used electric cars, the differences show up as follows:
| Model | What to separate when comparing | Effect on price |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla Model 3 | production period, facelift, drivetrain variant and battery | Cars at a similar price may differ in range and specification. The cheapest listing is therefore often not a direct competitor. |
| Volkswagen ID.3 | battery size, equipment and the charging specification of the version | A smaller battery appeals to different customers than a version designed for longer journeys. |
| Renault Zoe | battery and CCS connector for DC charging | A Zoe with CCS charges on direct current at up to 50 kW. A car without this equipment is of limited use for longer journeys. |
How to translate battery condition into price
SoH (state of health) expresses the remaining capacity of the battery relative to a new battery. It helps the dealer estimate how well the car will serve its next owner. The buyer can then rely on this figure when making a decision.
ADAC regards an SoH of at least 88% as reasonable at 100,000 km. This threshold helps to tell a battery with normal wear from a suspect one quickly. It does not, however, produce a universal price scale, because each percentage point of capacity is not worth the same on every car. Buyers also pay for the body, equipment, performance, warranty and overall usability of the car.
An up-to-date battery report helps to defend the price against cars whose battery condition nobody has documented. The report does not add a fixed premium to the price. Its value lies in removing uncertainty for the buyer. If the test reveals an unusually weak battery or a fault, the comparison with fault-free cars no longer holds. The extent of the problem and the repair options need to be known first, because a flat discount could easily underestimate the risk.
Before buying a car in, it is therefore worth having the battery tested and obtaining a report stating the date and mileage. In Germany, such a test from ADAC or TÜV costs roughly €70–90. It is a small item in the preparation budget that makes the buying price considerably more accurate.
What the remaining battery warranty adds
For most manufacturers, the warranty on the traction battery lasts 8 years or 160,000 km. For the valuation, what matters is how much warranty the specific car has left. Two cars with the same date of first registration can have very different headroom before the mileage limit.
The test and the warranty answer two different questions. The test describes the battery today. The warranty terms determine when the manufacturer will cover costs in the future. For a dealer, a good battery just before the end of its warranty therefore carries more risk than the same battery with several years of cover left.
How much weight range and charging should carry in the price
Buyers do not pay for battery capacity. They pay for not being restricted on their usual journeys. A smaller battery works well for a second car in the household. A customer looking for a single family car will be more concerned about longer journeys and charging stops.
The valuation should therefore take into account charging equipment as well as capacity. For AC charging, the power of the on-board charger matters. For DC charging, what counts is not only the peak power but also how long the car can sustain it during a charge. The kW figure alone therefore does not tell you how long a charging stop will take.
The Renault Zoe with and without CCS is a good commercial example. The CCS connector widens the range of customers for whom the car is suitable. Conversely, a smaller battery in an ID.3 does not necessarily call for a deep discount, provided the price matches the offers for similar versions and local demand.
The range shown on the instrument display does not measure battery condition, because it depends on previous driving style and conditions. The advert should therefore state the exact version, charging capability and test result. A range estimate the customer may not achieve in everyday driving has no place in the advert.
Why discounts and incentives on new electric cars change used prices
A nearly new used electric car competes with a new car that may be on special offer or eligible for a government incentive. The original list price therefore quickly loses its relevance. What the buyer cares about is how much a new car costs today.
The barometer published by the French associations Avere-France and Mobilians shows how small that gap can be. Between January and September 2026, the average price of an electric car under three years old was only 5% lower than the average price of a new electric car after incentives. With such a small difference, the used car has to offer something extra: suitable equipment, documented battery condition or immediate availability.
The valuation should therefore include the current price of a comparable new car, including the discounts and incentives available to customers in the country of sale. Incentives vary between European countries. A calculation based on one country's incentive therefore does not hold in another market.
When new electric cars become cheaper, the used car in your stock loses value too, regardless of what you paid for it. When repricing, be guided by today's competition, not by the margin you originally planned.
Where in Europe to sell an electric car
Demand for used electric cars is not the same everywhere in Europe. Countries differ in supply, new car prices and the conditions for running an electric car, and this also changes the scope for used cars. Experience from one country is therefore not enough to value a car you want to sell elsewhere.
The Netherlands shows how quickly a market can grow. According to the BOVAG association, 70,547 used electric cars were sold there in the first half of 2026, 54.2% more than a year earlier. The figure confirms growing sales, but it does not say how quickly a particular model or battery version will sell.
Knowing sales volumes is therefore not enough for a buyer. They need to combine them with prices and time to sell. A growing market is often hit at the same time by a large number of cars returning from leasing. When the supply of similar cars grows faster than demand, prices fall even when sales are at record levels.
Market Data from Carsdata shows how supply, prices and time on market are developing in individual markets and segments. When choosing the country of sale, the dealer can see where there is demand for electric cars and where supply is building up. The difference between the purchase price and the expected selling price then has to cover transport, preparation and a longer wait for a customer.
How to factor time to sell into the price
In France, professional sellers took an average of 134 days to resell a used electric car in the third quarter of 2026. Alongside a calculation based on a quick sale, you should therefore prepare a slower scenario as well. A purchase that only works with a fast turn leaves no room for a price reduction.
Every day in stock ties up capital. With €20,000 tied up at a rate of 3.77% a year, interest comes to approximately €124 over 60 days. Over 134 days it is more than double. The 3.77% rate corresponds to the average cost of new business loans in the euro area in August 2026.
Interest, however, is the smaller part of the risk. While the car waits, the new model may become cheaper or more comparable used cars may come onto the market. The loss from repricing can then easily exceed the cost of financing.
Illustrative calculation of the buying price
The example uses round figures in euros and does not describe a specific model or average market costs.
| Item | Sale within 60 days | Slow sale with a price reduction |
|---|---|---|
| Expected selling price | €23,000 | €22,000 |
| Transport, preparation, battery test, interest and risk contingency | €1,000 | €1,000 |
| Required contribution to overheads and profit | €2,000 | €2,000 |
| Maximum buying price | €20,000 | €19,000 |
The €1,000 budget is based on a sample quote from Germany. In that quote, driving the car to its destination over roughly 190 km, basic preparation and a battery test together cost approximately €644. The rest covers interest for both 60 and 134 days and a small contingency. All amounts must be on the same tax basis.
If the expected selling price falls by €1,000, the maximum buying price falls by the full amount as well. If the car is already in your stock, the same fall comes straight off the result of the deal.
Stock Report from Carsdata compares the dealer's stock with the market, shows days in stock and recommends a price for each car. It also flags cars that need action: repricing, adding equipment to the advert, better photos or a different category. A slow sale of an electric car does not necessarily mean the price is wrong. Often the advert simply does not describe the battery and charging in a way that shows the customer what they are paying for.
What to watch out for when valuing an electric car
The most expensive mistakes happen when a dealer compares cars that are not interchangeable, or when a calculation overlooks a change in the market.
- A discount based on the percentage of capacity lost. A decline in SoH cannot be converted directly into the price of the whole car. With a more serious finding, the cause and the cost of repair need to be known first.
- Confusing the advertised price with the achievable price. Expensive cars that stay in the listings for a long time push the comparison upwards. At the same time, they are a warning that cars at that price are not selling.
- Comparing with the original price list. The price of a used car today is capped by the supply of new cars, not by what the first owner paid.
- Repricing based on days in stock alone. A manufacturer promotion or an influx of competing cars calls for action immediately, not at the next scheduled stock review.
Carsdata: pricing electric cars against the whole market
Carsdata collects used car listings and auction offers from European portals, removes duplicates and standardises vehicle data. The dealer therefore bases pricing decisions for electric cars on the whole market, not on a hand-picked sample from one portal.
Three products work together in valuing an electric car:
- Price Report estimates the selling price of a specific car from comparable vehicles and adds a price range, a confidence level and the expected time to sell. The dealer then adds the battery test result and the remaining warranty to this baseline.
- Market Data shows how supply, prices and time on market are developing in the country and segment where the dealer wants to sell the electric car.
- Stock Report compares stock with the market, recommends a price for each car and highlights the cars that need repricing or better advertising.

FAQ
Can one price be used for an entire fleet of returned electric cars?
A single price is a useful first guide for a group of similar cars. For buying and for retail sale, however, divide the cars by mileage, equipment, battery condition and remaining warranty. Otherwise the better cars will pay for the losses on the weaker ones and you will not see the real margin on individual cars.
Should the original price of optional equipment be reflected in the price?
No, the original option price says nothing about what the equipment is worth today. Only what a used car buyer will pay extra for the equipment belongs in the price. A heat pump or a faster on-board charger can do more to help an electric car sell than an expensive styling pack.
How do you value a rare version with few comparable cars?
Allow for a wider price range and a more cautious buying price. Little competition may mean rarity, but it may just as well mean a narrow pool of interested buyers. A lack of comparable cars is therefore no reason to pay more.
